Bob Mann (00:00)
Welcome to this episode of Flickering Dreams. This is our weekly kind of get together over a coffee, although I don't seem to have a coffee in my hand. Our 'Cinema Cafe' where we just chat about what we've seen this week other than.

the films that we've reviewed or indeed the films we've reviewed. So this week we've reviewed Ghostbusters Frozen Empire, Roadhouse, which is, on Prime Video, Immaculate at the Cinema, a new Sydney Sweeney horror film, Late Night with the Devil, also in cinemas at the moment.

and Fast Charlie which is also streaming on Prime. So you can find each of those separate videos, or separate episodes of Flickering Dreams if you search for them on YouTube or your preferred audio platform. Any other films we've seen this week?

So one other film I've seen this week is Shirley, which is streaming on Netflix and that stars Regina King in the role of a politician. I would recommend it to you to take a look.

if nothing else, but for the acting of Regina King. And it's also one of the last appearances of Lance Reddick in a film before he died. And the film is actually dedicated to him. I don't know whether that was chronologically his very last film or not, but the film is dedicated to him. Very good film. And if more of you guys can watch it, we could maybe review it. Any other films you've seen this week?

Emma Sewell (01:45)
So I obviously it's not out yet but there was an unlimited screening of Mother's Instinct which yeah I mean that was a film.

Bob Mann (02:02)
Yeah, I've actually got that in the upcoming things that are coming out this week. So here's a little clip of Mother's Instinct.

Emma Sewell (02:08)
Mm.

Bob Mann (02:45)
Yes, Andy Godfrey also saw that today because it's actually out today that we're actually recording this podcast and he described it as very Hitchcockian. So I'm looking forward to seeing that one. It does look like my cup of tea and well, we've.

Emma Sewell (03:00)
It definitely, sorry I was just going to say, it definitely gives me vibes of Eileen, I don't know if that was one that you caught at the London Film Festival, but quite similar, and starring Anna Hathaway as well. Yeah.

Bob Mann (03:08)
Oh, right. Yes. I did.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good, good, good. Okay. Any any of us that you've seen Scott?

Scott Forbes (03:21)
Nothing new. I did catch a film called Work It on Netflix, which is a couple of years ago, sort of cheesy little dance, romantic comedy film. But if you're looking for something easy, I would say that's quite a nice one. But yeah, I think I'm with you, Bob. I'm really looking forward to Shirley. I've just not had the time for that one yet. You might remember when we did our way too early Oscar predictions a year ago. That was actually one I think I put as one of my

Bob Mann (03:35)
Okay. Okay.

Emma Sewell (03:35)
You

Scott Forbes (03:50)
sort of dark horses. And then it was delayed a long time. I think it's been delayed too far, which is why I've not put it in this year's list. But given what I think I know about it, and perhaps what you've said as well, Regina King might be one to look out for in the acting categories, maybe.

Bob Mann (03:53)
Yep.

Yes.

Maybe, maybe, yeah. Not sure. I assume it's been delayed, because I did notice, because I always, I mean, it's a Bob Mann thing to always at the end of a film, look at the MPAA certificate number as to what's happened to them. And we're kind of at the 54,500 kind of range at the moment for new films. And this one had a range that was,

a lot earlier than that so it's clearly been on the shelf for quite a long time before it came out. Yeah okay so other films coming out we just talked about Mother's Instinct also out in cinemas I think from tomorrow is this one God help us.

Emma Sewell (04:52)
that could be either.

Scott Forbes (04:57)
Hmm.

Emma Sewell (05:24)
Hey.

He's so cute.

Bob Mann (05:31)
I mean, that of course is Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. What is it? Godzilla multiplied by Kong? Godzilla and a very cross Kong? I mean, I don't know what you're supposed to make of that title, but I think this one is going to make Godzilla Minus One look like a complete masterpiece as a movie.

Emma Sewell (05:58)
It was. Not yet.

Bob Mann (05:58)
Which indeed it was. It was a masterpiece, I agree. It even won an Oscar, so it's so much of a masterpiece. So yeah, but I mean, this is one a bit like the last Transformers movie, which I'm not sure I can really be arsed to go and see this. It just holds no appeal for me at all.

Emma Sewell (06:17)
It's got Son of Kong in it, essentially.

Bob Mann (06:22)
Son of Kong. Yeah. Yeah.

Scott Forbes (06:25)
This is one of those where I'm looking and thinking, maybe if I go see it in 4D, that'll make it worth watching just because it can boost the experience, maybe.

Emma Sewell (06:34)
actually comes out the screen and slaps you in the face. That's all he does.

Bob Mann (06:38)
Godzilla blasts you with its nuclear blast. Well, there's no one I must admit that I will probably go and see, given my week ahead.

Emma Sewell (06:48)
I have already, I've got a triple bill booked for Good Friday and I'm doing the other new release and a re -watch of Ghostbusters.

Bob Mann (06:55)
Happy in.

But, there you go. Okay, the other new release which you talk about is this one. It's Kung Fu Panda 4.

Emma Sewell (07:10)
you

Bob Mann (07:40)
I mean Yeah, it's Kung Fu Panda. It's DreamWorks animation It's got a great all -star cast including people like Dustin Hoffman and Ian McShane are in the cast I noticed So I'm sure it'll be watchable I'm sure it'll be watchable. It's it I was on BBC Radio Solent this afternoon talking about the Easter films and my comment was apart from this film I

There's actually very little at the cinemas for younger kids. The only other one is Migration, which is still in cinemas after about 12 weeks or however long it's been. But if you want to take young kids to the cinema, it's really that one or Migration. Not much other choice. Yeah, so of that set, I think the only one in there that I'm really desperate to see is Mother's Instinct.

But we are kind of in that Oscar lull period, aren't we?

Scott Forbes (08:38)
There is one to bring up, not cinema release, but on Netflix. I was trying to find the exact name of it, but I think it's called The Beautiful Game. Something like that, starring Bill Nighy. And it's about the Homeless World Cup, I believe. And I think he's like the England manager of the England homeless team that sends the World Cup. That looks like it could be quite fun.

Bob Mann (08:51)
Oh yes.

Yeah, okay, yeah. Bill Nighy's always good value, isn't he? Okay, let's move on to our film quiz. And we've got another variant here, which Andy did a little bit earlier. I won't reveal what score he got, but it's this one here.

Emma Sewell (09:16)
Oh my God.

Bob Mann (09:33)
So

Emma Sewell (09:33)
Just, you might as well count me out already.

Bob Mann (09:36)
one is called sound tracking torture and What I've done once again similar format I have selected a film at random from the top 1000 box office films and I'm going to play you five pieces of music from the soundtrack and You have to try and identify the film

As always if you... Yes?

Emma Sewell (10:01)
going to ask can I guess every time do I lose points in this one?

Bob Mann (10:05)
You do not lose points for a wrong answer. So you can guess five different films if you want. And the one that is nearest the top, if you get it correct, will score you the points. There is also in this game, there is an additional 10 points for naming the composer of the film. And no sneaky Googling. Okay.

Emma Sewell (10:06)
Nice. Fantastic.

No, it's no joke.

Scott Forbes (10:24)
Oh f -

Emma Sewell (10:27)
To be fair, Scott, we're probably Lucky that Bob doesn't get to play this one.

Bob Mann (10:33)
Yes you are. Right so here comes this is just one continuous video with the tracks and afterwards you can show me your bits of paper. Okay here we go.

That's track one, here's track two.

Here's track three.

Scott Forbes (11:50)
Cough

Bob Mann (12:22)
Here comes track four, a bit more helpful.

Okay, not easy, but I think that track four might give you a choice of films to pick from.

So, and any idea for the composer as well?

Scott Forbes (14:02)
Ahem.

I feel like I should know when it's gonna -

Emma Sewell (14:09)
LOL

Scott Forbes (14:11)
got it wrong because I'm pretty sure he didn't do this franchise but...

Bob Mann (14:14)
Okay. Okay. Alrighty. So what have you got?

Scott Forbes (14:18)
So, well, my first three were just complete random guesses of Aladdin, Blade Runner 2049 and Schindler's List because I was getting nothing.

Bob Mann (14:28)
Right?

Emma Sewell (14:28)
You see my first one, it felt Indiana Jonesy to me and then the second one also felt Indiana Jonesy so I put the other one like the next one.

Scott Forbes (14:39)
Hmm.

Yeah so for four this is where I'm pretty sure I've got the franchise but I'm not sure about the film so for four I've said Lord of the Rings Fellowship and then I've switched to Lord of the Rings Return of the King for my fifth one and if you're going to say it's Two Towers I'm going to be so annoyed.

Bob Mann (15:00)
Okay, Emma?

Emma Sewell (15:01)
I wasn't specific but when we got to 3 I was like yeah that's Tolkien -y to me so I wouldn't have been able to tell you which film it was so I went Lord of the Rings Hobbit Lord of the Rings because I can't even remember what they're called.

Bob Mann (15:17)
Okay, that's going to be tricky isn't it? So here's the answer.

Emma Sewell (15:21)
I'm

Scott Forbes (15:23)
Oh

Bob Mann (15:31)
And it is The Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies by Howard Shore. That is actually number 59 in the list of the top 1000 box office films. It made just short of a billion dollars at the box office. So Andy actually didn't get that right either, but he did get 10 points for knowing Howard Shore. So...

So Andy's got 10 points from that one. Scott, I'm afraid you get zero points for that. Emma, you said the Hobbit, but I mean, that's not...

Emma Sewell (16:06)
I mean, I'll take five. I'll take five.

Scott Forbes (16:08)
I mean, she's covering herself with six films by that one answer.

Bob Mann (16:12)
Well, she is, but that's not bad. That's not bad. No, no, she said the Hobbit at Go4. I'm gonna, I'm gonna give you, I'm gonna, because you put the Hobbit specifically, I'm gonna give you five points as a consolation for that. Consolation.

Emma Sewell (16:18)
Yeah.

Scott Forbes (16:19)
This shit is a long -living slash hobbit. That could be any of six films.

Emma Sewell (16:23)
It's not cool.

Scott Forbes (16:33)
I'm going to know for future weeks that I can be more vague with my answers.

Bob Mann (16:36)
Well, you could be vague, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. I, yes, I haven't got the running total because it's on my wall upstairs and I've been evicted due to a sleeping child this week to the conservatory, but I will add those scores and give the running total next week. Let's just have a look now at the box office top 10 for the week.

Scott Forbes (16:38)
I'm sorry.

Emma Sewell (16:40)
yet slightly specific.

Bob Mann (17:05)
So this is to the 25th of March and at number one, it's not Dune 2 off the top spot. So Ghostbusters Frozen Empire is at number one, made over four million pounds at the box office. I say, we...

didn't actually rate it terribly highly, but it's at number one. And at number two is Dune. Dune has now topped $30 million after only four weeks, which is pretty good going as a run rate for the box office. Still a lot of people I talked to haven't seen Dune 2. And again, on my BBC Radio Solent show this afternoon, I was...

Basically name this as the film that people should go and see if they haven't seen it because it is still the best film out at cinema in my humble opinion. And number three is that other film that we reviewed this week which is Immaculate and not doing as much box office. That's 500,000 pounds, 522,000 pounds. But it's at number three in the box office. And number four is Wicked Little Letters. Still doing good business, five.

weeks in the chart made over 8 million pounds. At number five is that film we just talked about for kids which is Migration and that again eight weeks in the charts made over 19 million pounds now so it's a really good box office for Universal. Bob Marley, One Love is slipping down the charts now but it's done good business again 16.

4.6 million pounds at the box office. At number seven is another film we reviewed this week, Late Night with the Devil. It's not done a tremendous amount of business, but it is at number seven. At number eight, we've got one of the National Theatre Live performances, The Motive and The Cue. And this is a dramatized version starring Johnny Flynn as Richard Burton. And...

I can't remember who plays John Gielgud in it now. But I heard from someone today that that is supposed to be really, really good. So might be worth you catching that at the cinema because it's on cinema release. At number nine is Imaginary, the first of three different films about imaginary friends this year. And...

That's slipping down now, it's at number nine. And at number 10 is another event cinema thing, which is the opera Romeo and Juliet being shown in cinemas. So that's the top 10, I will stop sharing that.

and any other business folks.

Emma Sewell (20:05)
I would like to, instead of ranting in this one, I would like to recommend film snacks from Cineworld. So I tried their special Ghostbusters ICEE and the marshmallow one, really quite nice. I'm not going to try the lemon lime one, I just don't want it. But no, no.

Bob Mann (20:21)
Oh yes.

Okay.

You don't like lemon and lime?

Emma Sewell (20:32)
And I also had ice cream because you know, why not just ruin everything? Like, you know, who cares about being lactose intolerant? There's a buttercream cupcake flavour ice cream. Well worth trying. It's not actually as sweet as it sounds.

Bob Mann (20:48)
Really?

OK I did try one of their ice creams that sounded nice I can't remember it was strawberry crumble or something and it was too sweet for my taste I have to say but yeah OK oh that's a good recommendation snack recommendations that's a new line to go yeah anything from you Scott?

Scott Forbes (21:12)
Not a mini rant, but not really. It's one of those things that's come in common in the last few years is the lack of Easter films at Easter. We see every other sort of major holiday gets their slew of films that come out. But Easter, whether it be religious ones or secular ones, where are they? Either in cinemas or even just looking through TV listings. Back when I was a child, I remember you used to...

get like your Ten Commandments and all these big Star movies.

Bob Mann (21:45)
The Greatest Story Ever Told with John Wayne. Yes. Surely this was the son of God. Yeah. Yeah. Woo hoo!

Scott Forbes (21:48)
Yeah.

Okay, less said about John Wayne, the better. Overrated actor in the world, but I'm just gonna throw that out there. Shots fired. Yeah, just throw that in. Yeah, lack of Easter films. Disappointed in that.

Bob Mann (22:03)
Fedayn.

Yeah, yeah, I think that's quite a good rant.

Emma Sewell (22:10)
I can recommend an Easter film for you, it's streaming on Prime and that is, Beaster Day, Here Comes Peter Cotton -Hell. And genuinely just go and look at the poster, it's amazing.

Scott Forbes (22:13)
Okay.

Bob Mann (22:27)
Okay, is that a new film or is that?

Emma Sewell (22:29)
No, no, so that's uh... I'm ten years old now. A classic with three out of ten on IMDB.

Bob Mann (22:32)
10 years 10 years old okay

Scott Forbes (22:35)
It sounds like the kind of film that cost ten quid. Yeah, exactly. There we go.

Bob Mann (22:39)
yes that sounds like that sounds like that all right good stuff and i i could have a rant corner about the the bunch of people who were in my ghostbusters uh screening at every man cinema in Salisbury who just broke every single code of conduct you can imagine they were shouting they were getting up every two minutes and going out for drinks

Emma Sewell (22:41)
it

Bob Mann (23:08)
They were using their phones, they were turning their phone torches on and looking for stuff under their seat at one point. They were absolutely obnoxious. And basically the cinema got so fed up with them that told them exactly where they could go almost en masse. And they indeed left. I'm not sure whether the cinema management left, but all credit to every man, Salisbury.

The manager at the entrance gave each of us who attended it a ticket to come back and see another film at another time. They were that disruptive. That was good of Everyman. Good customer service. So this episode of Liquor and Dreams is sponsored by Everyman, the comfy cinema that serves food and drink to your seat, including Spielbergers, which are absolutely excellent.

Emma Sewell (24:05)
going to give you more free tickets, Bob.

Bob Mann (24:08)
Well, I know I'm an everywhere every every man everywhere card holder so I can see as many as I like Right, I think that's probably our lot for flickering dreams one thing we haven't done this week Which we need to get to at some point when we've caught it with Andy as well is our ridiculously early Oscar predictions Which I must admit I haven't done yet, but this is where we guess

No, not guess, guess? We don't guess. We analyze, we predict, we analyze and we predict what are gonna be the 10 films shortlisted for the 2025 Best Film Oscar. And then we'll get horrible egg on our face when we get it horribly wrong. But we'll do that in an upcoming show in hopefully next week. I will make a note to try and get mine done.

Emma Sewell (24:40)
Please, carefully, Bob.

Scott Forbes (24:40)
It's all about skill and planning.

Bob Mann (25:06)
Have you done your list guys?

Scott Forbes (25:09)
I've done a list, but every time I've done it, I've changed it. I am so confused, yeah, to change it again.

Emma Sewell (25:09)
like.

Bob Mann (25:12)
You've got another week to change it again.

Emma Sewell (25:15)
Yeah, my list is fluctuating between 10 and 20 films. Yeah, I know, I know, I'm trying, I'm trying.

Bob Mann (25:22)
Okay, you can only have ten. You can only have ten.
